Big Reactor Design

Postby Molybdene » Tue Nov 03, 2015 1:28 pm

Ok, I need to work on reactors, and I need some advices, etc.

I'm not worrying on turbines optimization right now, that'll wait.

My point of view on reactors are : casing is "cheap" on long term. Yellorite is not a big issue. I want raw power, and for that I'm heading towards a "close to 1000°C" one. Is it a good idea? I do not know. But I'll go with that for now.

Here is my current design plan :
a 11*11*11 casing, so 9*9*9 interior. A total of 20 fuel rods, for a production of 63 700 mB/t, and consuming fuel at a rate of 0.86mB/t at 1008 °C

Graphite blocs are just there to looks good.

What do the experts think of this?

Here's my reactor
I really know nothing about them because this is my first time touching the mod. I haven't tried active cooling yet, so if you make one, tell me what you learn so I can switch mine.
Also, I made the mistake of not being able to access my reactor from the top, so I had to fill my reactor with liquid ender from the inside, as well as leave the coolant in while extending the bottom. Was not easy, don't do that to yourself.

I've worked some more and got this one :

DESIGN HERE about same temperature as the previous one for worst fuel efficiency (I don't care about this one) and 66 900 mB/t

Went on another direction myself.
Having one big reactor that I will struggle to connect to enough water to cool it down is stupid, especially now that I know that you can only put 2000mB/t steam on a turbine.
I manage to create a cool-looking 9*9*9 reactor that output 111 000 mB/t but I can't imagine linking it to fifty turbines.

my new design is one reactor for 4 turbines, each turbine generating 28 000 Rf/t from the 2000 mB/t steam, and as many reactor that I care to build.

the reactor will be slim & tall, as it is a double core 3*3*14 DESIGN HERE. Made it for the size (14 interior high so 16) & getting exactly 8000 mB/t output.
Turbines configuration is set (32 Ludicrite blocs as coil, running at around 7185 rpm, which is a resonance speed for max output), but dimension is yet to be done (trying to do a slim design too). more test to do.

Build a coke oven and blast furnace from Immersive Engineering. Extremely easy steel, plus coal coke burns a lot longer than normal coal.

Build a induction furnace from Thermal Expansion. iron + coal dust => "instant" steel.

I've been getting my steel from putting coal dust in a magma crucible then putting that in my smeltery with iron. May not be good enough for the 32 turbines I'm planning to make to take the steam from my reactor. And don't you only need to pump enough water into the system to fill it once and then the turbines will turn the steam back into water?

About the turtle that dig the "box" for your reactor.

I'm currently digging a 29*29*30 hole & putting a box of marble around.
I'm not using turtles.

I know they are fun little things, but they are not fast enough.
As I don't care about the resources, I'm using a BC Filler. Those are AWESOME.
